Providing residential aged care is challenging because of the complexity of residents' health status, difficulties recruiting and retaining skilled staff, and financial and regulatory constraints. This paper discusses some of these challenges and describes an innovative model of care, termed 'The Tri-focal model of care'. This model was developed based on the concepts of 'partnership-centred care', 'positive work environment' and the need for evidence-based practice to underpin all aspects of care. It is envisaged that the implementation of this model will provide a rich learning environment that advances the teaching-nursing home concept and the quality of residential aged care.

The β7 integrins α4β7 and Eβ7 play key roles in forming the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, and contribute to chronic inflammation. The α4β7 integrin-mediated adhesion of activated lymphocytes is largely due to a transient increase in avidity from ligand-induced clustering of α4β7 at the cell-surface. Here, we report that L and D enantiomers of a cell-permeable peptide YDRREY encompassing residues 735-740 of the cytoplasmic tail of the β7 subunit inhibit the adhesion of T cells to β7 integrin ligands. The YDRREY peptide abrogated mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1-induced clustering of α4β7 on the surface of activated T cells. A mutated form of the YDRREY peptide carrying either single or double conservative mutations at Tyr735Phe and Tyr740Phe was unable to inhibit T cell adhesion, suggesting that both tandem tyrosines are critical for activity. The YDRREY peptide was bound and phosphorylated by focal adhesion kinase and src, which may serve to sequester cytoskeletal proteins to the cytoplasmic domain of 4β7. The quasi-palindromic sequence YDRREY within the β7 cytoplasmic tail constitutes a cell adhesion regulatory domain that modulates the interaction of β7-expressing leukocytes with their endothelial and epithelial ligands. Cell-permeable peptidomimetics based on this motif have utility as anti-inflammatory reagents for the treatment of chronic inflammatory disease.

Multicentric carpal-tarsal osteolysis is a rare skeletal disorder characterized by osteolysis of the metacarpal, carpal, and tarsal bones and leading to crippling joint deformities. Progressive nephropathy occurs in more than half the cases. All previously reported series with renal biopsies showed only end-stage renal disease on histological examination because of the late presentation to nephrologists. Accurate diagnosis of the underlying renal pathological state therefore has not been possible. We report the first case in which early and sequential renal biopsies were performed. These show the renal lesion to be focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis, which was treated successfully with cyclosporine A.

Aim: Most risk assessments and decisions in conservation are based on surrogate approaches, where a group of species or environmental indicators are selected as proxies for other aspects of biodiversity. In the focal species approach, a suite of species is selected based on life history characteristics, such as dispersal limitation and area requirements. Testing the validity of the focal species concept has proved difficult, due to a lack of theory justifying the underlying framework, explicit objectives and measures of success. We sought to understand the conditions under which the focal species concept has merit for conservation decisions. Location: Our model system comprised 10 vertebrate species in 39 patches of native forest embedded in pine plantation in New South Wales, Australia. Methods: We selected three focal species based on ecological traits. We used a multiple-species reserve selection method that minimizes the expected loss of species, by estimating the risk of extinction with a metapopulation model. We found optimal reserve solutions for multiple species, including all 10 species, the three focal species, for all possible combinations of three species, and for each species individually. Results: Our case study suggests that the focal species approach can work: the reserve system that minimized the expected loss of the focal species also minimized the expected species loss in the larger set of 10 species. How well the solution would perform for other species and given landscape dynamics remains unknown. Main conclusions: The focal species approach may have merit as a conservation short cut if placed within a quantitative decision-making framework, where the aspects of biodiversity for which the focal species act as proxies are explicitly defined, and success is determined by whether the use of the proxy results in the same decision. Our methods provide a framework for testing other surrogate approaches used in conservation decision-making and risk assessment. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

In the high-contact restaurant context, customers frequently “overstay,” which negatively influences focal customers waiting for tables. We examine service recovery of this failure, otherwise termed an other-customer-caused failure (OCCF) by restaurants, and its influence on focal customer complaint intentions to the organization, namely vent and voice. OCCFs are commonplace and can have a damaging effect on service organizations, and thus need to be managed; yet empirical examination of their recovery is scarce. We address this by testing the effect of the recovery actions of wait comfort, service-worker effort, and apology on focal customers’ vent and voice complaint intentions. We found that these recovery actions interact complexly. Wait comfort is obligatory in reducing customer complaints, while effort and apology are substitutable when a comfortable wait is provided. This is an important contribution, as wait comfort has not previously been examined as a recovery action.

Soon after the French Revolution started in 1789, the great English poet William Wordsworth penned these memorable words: "Bliss was it at that time to be alive, but to be young was very heaven." He captured the excitement of a watershed period of human endeavors for his audience} but noted that the future belonged to the young. That is the message of this final chapter: that the future is bright for college graduates who are prepared to work hard. Fortune favors the prepared mind. The future is bright for journalists and journalism, and that future offers multiple possibilities for people who are prepared. It helps, though, to pause briefly to look at the past and to see what we can learn from it. As former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once noted, the person who ignores history is condemned to repeat its mistakes.

Convergence is a revolutionary and evolutionary form of journalism that is emerging in many parts of the world. As a student graduating from a journalism program in the early 21 st century, you need to know about convergence because it is likely to influence the way your career evolves. Over the course of the next decade, you probably will work in several media platforms, perhaps with different companies, but also possibly with the same company but doing varied forms of journalism. All journalists need to know how to tell stories in all media, and how to write appropriately for those media, as preparation for this new era.

A combination of sound, image, text, and interactivity-hereafter referred to as multimedia journalism-gives media practitioners a new way to tell stories, using the strengths of each medium to produce a more compelling package. From the outset, a multimedia journalist must appreciate the potential and power of each medium and capitalize on those strengths. In doing so the multimedia reporter produces journalism that is well beyond what a single medium can do. The multimedia reporter needs to know how to use a variety of digital tools, but the essential requirement is a multimedia mind-set. Loosely articulated, this mind-set requires the ability to conceive of stories that go beyond a single medium when it is appropriate to use more than one medium. Sometimes one medium is sufficient to provide what audiences need. Implicit in this statement is an understanding of audiences (note the plural form) and an acceptance that the fundamental role of journalism remains constant, which is to inform, educate, and entertain.

EGovernance is fast becoming a focal issue with governments worldwide, enabled by the ICT revolution. Many economies are adopting eGovernance as a medium of reaching out and empowering the average citizen, stretching tax revenues and cutting down transaction costs. In this paper, we have examined Germany and India, two disparate economies in terms of development yet similar in administrative structures against a backdrop of insightful socio-economic fabric. We have taken a positivist approach and used the exploratory research method, supported by the transaction cost economic theory to draw broad conclusions on similarities and differences in eGovernance adoption, within these economies.

Managing project quality is becoming focal issue in major enterprises as popular quality programs from International Standard Organization (ISO) such as ISO9000 certification processes gain momentum. Large organizations as well as small-medium enterprises (SMEs) seem to implement this program, albeit for varied reasons. In this paper, we have reported the findings from an action research project conducted in SMEs who are implementing quality management. The findings indicate that external pressures such as regulations, competition and perceived success - defined on their own parameters, may be the drivers and the certification does not necessarily result in better performance. We are in the process of developing a cost-effective guideline/framework - based on this research, for SMEs involved in the certification process. In addition, the results are aimed at informing academia as well as certification bodies of specific concerns with SMEs.

Walter Gropius established the Bauhaus in Germany in 1919. The organization established one of the most important design movements of the twentieth century. The organization had a very brief existence and was fraught with disruptions and emotional turmoil. Despite the difficulties, Gropius managed to keep the organization alive long enough for its extraordinary creativity to be harnessed and developed. The organization closed in 1933, but by that time its legitimacy as a source of design and pedagogy was assured. Organizational survival is often dependent on government subsidies, support through sales, donations or sponsorships. A factor in attracting this support is the perceived legitimacy of the organisation. Legitimacy is defined as a degree of consensus that the meanings and behavior of an organisation are valid and desirable by society in
general. Legitimacy remains an undeveloped concept. This paper reviews relevant theories of legitimacy, considers the role of emotions in shaping legitimacy and the emotions evoked as legitimacy is negotiated by internal and external stakeholders. A historical case study of the Bauhaus provides the backdrop for portraying the focal role emotions can play in institutionalization. The paper concludes with a discussion of the lessons of legitimacy available to contemporary cultural organisations.

There are many proposals for managing biodiversity by using surrogates, such as umbrella, indicator, focal, and flagship species. We use the term biodiversity management unit for any ecosystem-based classificatory scheme for managing biodiversity. The sufficiency of biodiversity management unit classification schemes depends upon (1) whether different biotic elements (e.g., trees, birds, reptiles) distinguish between biodiversity management units within a classification (i.e., coherence within classes}; and (2) whether different biotic elements agree upon similarities and dissimilarities among biodiversity management unit classes (i.e., conformance among classes). Recent evaluations suggest that biodiversity surrogates based on few or single taxa are not useful. Ecological vegetation classes are an ecosystem-based classification scheme used as one component for biodiversity management in Victoria, Australia. Here we evaluated the potential for ecological vegetation classes to be used as biodiversity management units in the box-ironbark ecosystem of central Victoria, Australia. Eighty sites distributed among 14 ecological vegetation classes were surveyed in the same ways for tree species, birds, mammals, reptiles, terrestrial invertebrates, and nocturnal flying insects. Habitat structure and geographic separations also were measured, which, with the biotic elements, are collectively referred to as variables. Less than half of the biotic element-ecological vegetation class pairings were coherent. Generalized Mantel tests were used to examine conformance among variables with respect to ecological vegetation classes. While most tests were not significant, birds, mammals, tree species, and habitat structure together showed significant agreement on the rating of similarities among ecological vegetation classes. In this system, use of ecological vegetation classes as biodiversity management units may account reasonably well for birds, mammals, and trees; but reptiles and invertebrates would not be accommodated. We conclude that surrogates will usually have to be augmented or developed as hierarchies to provide general representativeness.

Tanshinone IIB (TSB) is a major active constituent of the root of Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) used in the treatment of acute stroke. Danshen extracts and TSB have shown marked neuron-protective effects in mouse studies but there is a lack of clinical evidence for the neuron-protective effects of Danshen and its active ingredients. This study investigated the neuron-protective effects of TSB in experimentally stroked rats. TSB at 5 and 25 mg/kg by intraperitoneal injection significantly reduced the focal infarct volume, cerebral histological damage and apoptosis in rats subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) compared to MCAO rats receiving vehicle. This study demonstrated that TSB was effective in reducing stroke-induced brain damage and may represent a novel drug candidate for further development. Further mechanistic studies are needed for the neuron-protective activity of TSB.
